How The World Of Tech Is Changing

Microsoft office 365 for the modern workplace

95% of the business owners, IT directors and other professionals who attended our Microsoft Cloud workshop said they thought they could be smarter in how they use Microsoft Office. Do you share this mind-set too?

It’s one of the things Charles Eales from Microsoft echoed on the day too. Charles, Microsoft on their Modern Workplace initiative, said 86% of CEOs consider digital as their number one priority. Most CEOs understand digital and the benefits it could bring. But they don’t know where to get started.

Here are just some of the other things he shared:

We’re part of the 4th industrial revolution.

Our first revolution was in 1784 with the introduction of steam power. The second was about the internal combustion engine. The third, which started in 1969, allowed electronics, IT and automated production to flourish. And that leads us to now…

Today, there’s a blurring of the physical and digital world, and technology is driving this. It’s changing how we communicate and live. And it’s becoming more affordable too. Something such as a drone in 2007 cost $700,000. Now you can get a good one for $700.

This affordability is driving a huge pace of change in business. And it’s no longer just FTSE 500s who can afford the best technology. In fact, it’s within smaller businesses, which are often much more nimble, where there’s so much opportunity.

Data

There’s going to be 163 zettabytes created every year by 2025. (We don’t know what a zettabyte is either but it’s a huge amount!) And over the past two years, 90% of all the data ever collected has been recorded.

That’s all kinds of things – what we’ve bought, what we’ve taken pictures of, where we’ve looked, what healthcare we’ve used and so on. We’re generating so much data. And businesses can really use this to their advantage.

But how do you understand data? Analytics, that’s how. Understanding data and then using it is expected to be a $200bn global market by 2020.

There’s an opportunity for everyone

Whatever business you’re in, there’s an industry opportunity. From healthcare to education, from pharma to oil and gas. Charles showed a table by McKinsey highlighting the opportunities for every business in every industry.

Technology, as we mentioned, is now affordable. It can be used to help people be more productive. It can help you collaborate to work more efficiently, use data to make better decisions and get to know your customers better. It can improve service levels and reduce costs. There are just so many benefits.

So how do you do it?

Charles said there are four ways. And because we’re an accredited Gold Standard Microsoft Partner, these are things we’re used to talking about and working with businesses on.

  • Empower your employees
  • Engage your customers
  • Optimize your operations
  • Transform your products
